George Nash and Fred Elgar were friends for nearly 60 years, moving down from London to Winklebury in Basingstoke in the early 1960s, but in October 2020 they both sadly past away. Their families were unable to give them the send off they deserved due to COVID restrictions, so they came up with an incredible way to celebrate their lives. As both were keen footballers, their families have come together to hold a charity football match for their very own Winklebury Legend’s Trophy.
“Having this football match means we can get together to celebrate George and Fred’s lives in a way that is very fitting for both legends.”
The families nominated Naomi House & Jacksplace as their benefiting charity for this wonderful event as both George and Fred adored children and would have been delighted to know that money raised will go towards making a difference to the lives of the children and young people in our local hospices.
George was a Crystal Palace supporter, so his friends and family will be making up the Crystal Palace side, and the Arsenal side will be made up of Fred’s friends and family as he was an Arsenal supporter. The match will be held at the Hampshire FA Stadium in Winklebury on Saturday 17th July from 2pm.
“I am so excited about this event and I am really looking forward to seeing family, friends, the good people of Winklebury and from further afield coming to celebrate the lives of my dear husband George and his friend Fred. I was absolutely devastated when George passed away in October 2020 and could only have 30 people at his funeral. I know if things had been normal the chapel would have been bursting at the seams. I know George and Fred will be there with us on the day cheering on their teams whilst having a bit of banter between themselves.”
Open to all, tickets are £6 per adult (under 16’s are free with an accompanying adult) and raffle tickets are £2 each, with all proceeds from the day going to Naomi House & Jacksplace. There are some exciting items to be won in the raffle, including a 2 night stay in Weymouth, Fourball at Mill Ride Golf Club and a Bluetooth speaker as well as alcohol and chocolate.
