Storm is a very gentle Labrador, who regularly visits Naomi House & Jacksplace along with her owner, Nicky. They both have been volunteering at our hospices since January 2024, and have been spreading joy to all hospice visitors and staff since then.

She loves coming here. As soon as we get out of the car, her tail starts wagging and she knows where she is going.

Storm has been training with Nicky for animal therapy for a while. She has been fully assessed by the charity, Pets As Therapy, which makes sure that animals are happy being handled and are even-tempered.

I thought that Storm would be really good at this. She is a very relaxed dog and she loves the attention she gets every time she visits the hospices.

We find that animal therapy is very beneficial for the children and young adults who use our hospices. Sometimes they might have worries that animal therapy can help relieve. When we are with animals, it can create a sense of wellbeing, because of the special relationship we share.

Spending time with an animal can encourage positive responses from children and young adults. For example, playing with or stroking an animal releases endorphins, which increases a feeling of wellbeing and happiness and reduces stress levels.

Even if a child or young adult finds it difficult to move by themselves, the staff can help them reach out and stroke Storm. The action of stretching out and using their hands, helps to increase muscle strength and mobility.

Most of my career has been with disabled children. How lucky am I to use my animals as well, to bring a difference to their lives. It’s nice to give something back by volunteering.

Nicky has also been practising Hippotherapy for a long time. Hippotherapy is a form of physiotherapy treatment which utilises a pony’s walk to facilitate movement for children with disabilities.

Pets As Therapy is a national charity that enhances the health and wellbeing of thousands of people in communities across the UK.
