2 weeks ago, 35 runners took on the Great South Run to raise money for Naomi House & Jacksplace. 5 of the wonderful runners were part of our care team. Collectively around £5.5k has been raised so far to support our work and allowing us to continue delivering care and support for children, young adults and their families.
Carers, Sandra and Richard, Claire and Charlotte from our Play Team, and Paediatric Palliative Care Consultant, Dr. Tim Warlow, were the dedicated staff that tied up their laces and took on the race for the hospice that means so much to them.
I think the work the hospice does to support children and young adults is essential and should be available to more children and families. I am passionate about providing the best quality of life for these children and want to do everything I can to support and expand the service.
The iconic 10-mile route around Portsmouth took place under ideal race conditions. On race day there was a lively presence from spectators along the route including our incredible volunteers cheering runners to keep going.
The dedication from the runners and their fundraising efforts makes such a difference for Naomi House & Jacksplace and could help fund around 250 hours of expert nursing care.
Hear what our team had to say about the Great South Run below.
To work for Naomi House & Jacksplace is such an incredible privilege and one I would never take for granted. The privilege of being able to support the children, young adults and their families to have access to services that can make a huge difference to their lives is incredible but to also have an opportunity to take part in an event to help raise awareness and extra funds was something I really wanted to be part of. I felt such pride wearing my Team Naomi vest and the challenge of running 10 miles became so much more than the run itself.
The atmosphere on the day was amazing and really gave me the buzz I needed to get through the run. There was something special about the buildup and the run itself, knowing that a group of us were supporting each others training journey, sharing our worries and excitement and spurring each other on. Whether our daily role is play, carer or doctor, we had the same reason for taking part and that was the love and dedication for Naomi House & Jacksplace.
The set up was fantastic, the atmosphere buzzing and overall, a fantastic experience that left me feeling a huge sense of achievement that I feel very proud to have been part of.
I chose to run for Naomi House & Jacksplace because it’s a charity I believe makes a difference to peoples lives, particularly at end of life and post bereavement, I’m always proud to say I work for Naomi House and feel privileged to to what I do and work with such an incredible team!
Best part of the day was the crowds and the atmosphere as I ran round, and felt moved to see the amount of names and photos on peoples T-shirts who were running in aid of, someone they’ve loved or lost through whichever charity they were raising money for! And made me feel huge emotion for the life stories they were running for.
