On Saturday 14th September, friends, Sylvain and Lee completed an epic cycling challenge. They cycled 1,200km from Chambéry, France to Naomi House & Jacksplace in Sutton Scotney. Together they have raised nearly £5,000 for our hospices.

The pair, both lecturers at Solent University, took on the challenge in memory of Sylvain’s daughter, Zoe, who died of brain cancer (DIPG) in June 2019. Zoe and her family visited Naomi House to spend precious time together and stayed at the hospices during Zoe’s last days as well as after she died.

When Sylvain and Lee arrived at the hospices, they were welcomed by cheering friends and staff at the finish line. They cycled through the finish arch and enjoyed refreshments provided by the catering team.

Zoe’s dad, Sylvain said:

It was a huge challenge but it went by so quickly. The weather was challenging at the beginning with lots of rain so it was difficult to cycle through but we kept pushing. We had a timetable to keep to so we just concentrated on getting to the next city.

It has been fantastic to raise money for Naomi House & Jacksplace and we are glad we could do our little bit to support them. The hospices supported us with respite care and end of life care for Zoe, they were a great help.

Pete Abrahams, Head of Supporter Services at Naomi House & Jacksplace, said:

I’m blown away by the enthusiasm, determination and courage of Sylvain and Lee. I kept in contact with them during the challenge and I know it’s not been easy. It means such a great deal when families who have used our services fundraise to help other families who are in our care. Every penny they’ve raised makes such a difference and helps us provide outstanding care for local children, young adults and families.
